Alfons Mucha was born in 1860 in Ivančice, a small town in southern Moravia. He rose to international fame in Paris at the turn of the twentieth century—a period also known as the fin de siècle—with his elegant designs for theater posters created for Sarah Bernhardt, the most famous French actress of the time. When Mucha first visited the United States in 1904, he was celebrated as “the greatest decorative artist in the world” and became one of the first artists to achieve international success both in Europe and America.

Mucha developed his own distinctive style, known as “le style Mucha,” characterized by harmonious compositions, flowing forms, organic lines, and muted tones. Over time, his style became synonymous with the newly emerging artistic movement of the era—art nouveau. Mucha was a leading figure of this movement, which came to define the spirit of the age.
