LOOP: Jakub Kodl

In this year’s last episode of the Prague Art Week podcast, we spoke with Jakub Kodl from KodlContemporary – a gallery focused on contemporary art. We talked about what art means to him in the context of his family tradition, what it’s like behind the scenes in the gallery world, and what place Czech art has in the global context.

In the interview, we return to two exhibitions that KodlContemporary presented during Prague Art Week:Bod Nulain the flagship gallery, the so-called “cube” on the Prague waterfront, and a site-specific exhibitionGrid Fall at Laichter House. Jakub Kodl explained why “free” exhibition projects and cooperation with institutions are very important to them in this regard: “We bring art into other contexts, the exhibition does not always have to be for sale. It is important that private galleries, just like in the West, cooperate with institutions and do non-commercial projects. At the end of the day, it is about educating society… It is about leaving a mark.”

We also wondered why he decided to buildstone gallery? The gallery is “very much about the hot spot and meeting people” and the appropriate space, in the case of KodlContemporary a glass “cube”, is said to have played a key role.

“We want to establish ourselves in the Czech Republic so that we can continue to grow,” says the gallerist in an interview, who opened a new exhibition space at the Fairmont Hotel in Prague in September. In his opinion, the path abroad then leads through trade fairs. As an example of an artist with whom KodlContemporary intends to continue working, he mentionedMartin Janecký, whom he described as an absolutely essential contemporary Czech artist, with whom the gallery has big plans.
