LOOP: MICHAEL NOSEK

Text by:Lenka Bakeš

In the next episode of the Prague Art Week Podcast from the LOOP series, we welcomed Michael Nosek, a graduate of the Painting Studio III at the Academy of Fine Arts in Prague. In his work, Michael focuses on themes of individual identity and introspection—whether through painting, drawing, or expressive textile masks.

At Bold Gallery, he is opening his first solo exhibition Afterimage, which marks a new chapter in his practice, both thematically and formally. The exhibition runs from September 18 to October 18, 2025, at Bold Gallery in Prague. The curator is Eva Bláhová Riebová, and the project is part of this year’s Prague Art Week—the city’s largest contemporary art showcase. The opening takes place on September 17 at 6 PM.

How did Michael’s path lead from depicting reality to abstraction? How does he perceive the interconnectedness of the different media in his work? And what lies behind the technique he presents in this exhibition?

“Painting, working with textiles, and drawing are integral parts of my practice. I feel a strong inner need for each of these media, and when one becomes exhausted, I can return to another with joy and confidence. This transition often opens up new possibilities and ideas,” says Michael Nosek about his work. He also explains why his new exhibition is titled Afterimage and how he engages with the theme of the eye’s memory.

In the interview, you’ll also hear how Michael has been inspired by the themes of finitude and apocalypse, how parenthood has transformed his practice, and what his collaboration with Bold Gallery was like.
