The Picture Gallery contains over 4,000 works of art, and it is the oldest continuously existing collection of paintings in the Czech Republic, with roots that date back to the reign of Emperor Rudolf II. Given its quality, it ranks among the most important art collections in Europe. After 1989 the exhibition spaces were renovated according to a design by Bořek Šípek, which included furnishing the interiors with seating. The collection of the new Picture Gallery received international recognition in 2001, when it was exhibited in its entirety in Maastricht.
