Spring break destinations

Looking for inspiration on how to spend your spring days? Embark on an artistic journey to the Congo at the New Stage, step into the mysterious metaverse at Rudolfinum, or explore The Landscape of Absence at MeetFactory.

Eight visual artists have created a unique collection of works inspired by an expedition to the Congo, which took place in September 2024 under the patronage of the Save Elephants organization. The opening will be held on Thursday, March 6, at 7 PM. In collaboration with KodlContemporary, the artworks will be showcased at the pre-auction exhibition of the online auction Artslimit from March 3 to March 21 in the Operational Building B of the National Theatre (Václav Havel Square). The exhibition space will be open to the public Monday to Friday from 10 AM to 6 PM.

Artists Alžběta Josefy, Adam Kašpar, Markéta Kolářová, Patrik Kriššák, Laura Limbourg, Martin Salajka, Vladimír Véla, and Jan Vytiska have captured the rich experiences of the journey in a series of unique paintings. These works reflect life in the Congo, explore the balance between humans and nature, and highlight themes of wildlife conservation. Each artist interprets these topics through their own artistic style and perspective.

As part of the accompanying program, guided tours and discussions with expedition participants are planned for March 13. The individual artworks will be available in the online auction on the Artslimit platform, starting on March 3 and running until Sunday, March 23.

“The proceeds from the auction will primarily be used to create a new documentary film aimed at raising awareness among the Czech public about the possible extinction of elephants and motivating them to engage in their protection,” says Lukáš Hodis, the film’s producer and organizer of the artistic expedition.

The group exhibition Poetics of Encryption, running from February 13, 2025, to May 11, 2025, at the Rudolfinum Gallery, is based on Nadim Samman’s recently published book The Poetics of Encryption: Art in the Technocene. The exhibition explores the root of the word encryption, which suggests a form of hiddenness (whether inherent or intentional), mapping an imaginative landscape filled with black spots, black boxes, and black holes. These very terms hint at how modern technologies entrap their users, operate covertly, and distort cultural space-time. Based on these themes, the exhibition is divided into three sections, balancing between informed concern and occult dreaming.

The Landscape of Absence at MeetFactory presents imaginary spaces of a future world where humans, as a distinct biological species, have vanished, yet traces of their presence still permeate surrounding ecosystems and remnants of technological infrastructures. This moment—when humanity has failed in its role as a sustainable steward of the planet—becomes the starting point for exploring new metamorphoses of the universe.

Exhibiting artists: Kryštof Brůha, Mark Dorf, Lenka Glisníková, Šimon Chovan, Inside Job (Ula Lucińska & Michał Knychaus), Andrea Mikyska, Natália Sýkorová, Stanislav Zábrodský.
