What\u2019s the most bizarre thing you\u2019ve ever had to deal with while installing an exhibition?<\/strong>
MICHAL GRATCL (gallery founder): Some people might find the way we approach installations itself a little unusual, even bizarre. We don\u2019t work with the traditional model of a clean, white space where each artwork is isolated on its own. We combine contemporary art with design and try to create environments that feel believable\u2014spaces where visitors can actually imagine themselves living with these things. That\u2019s why sometimes the hardest part isn\u2019t physically installing something, but finding the right balance between the individual artworks and objects. We don\u2019t want them to look randomly arranged next to one another; we want them to genuinely communicate with each other. We\u2019re not trying to create artificial scenography, but rather looking for that moment when everything starts to feel natural and effortless.<\/p>\r\n

What does it usually look like at your gallery 20 minutes before an opening?<\/strong>
MG: It depends a lot on the artist. One unnamed painter, for example, was still dealing with something in Prague about two hours before his opening in Brno and arrived literally at the last minute, roughly twenty minutes before it started. In the end, I even had to lend him my clothes. The funniest part is that I kept seeing him wearing them for about another two years afterwards. So basically, he spent two years wearing my clothes. (laughs)<\/em> Of course, that\u2019s more of an exceptional situation. Usually, twenty minutes before an opening, everything is ready, the final details are taken care of, and the space is slowly starting to fill with the first guests. I really like that brief moment when everything is finished, but for a few more minutes, the exhibition still belongs only to us.<\/p>\r\n

How do you know when an exhibition has really worked?<\/strong>
MG: I\u2019m probably going to say something clich\u00e9d now, but for me, it\u2019s fundamentally about a feeling. I exhibit things that I have a personal connection to and that I could imagine having in my own home. When I leave an exhibition with the feeling that everything works exactly as it should, and the artist feels the same way, that\u2019s the most important confirmation for me. Of course, we\u2019re a gallery, and sales are a natural part of what we do. But I would never measure the success of an exhibition solely by how many works were sold.<\/p>\r\n

Which exhibition will you never forget, and why?<\/strong>
MG: Once, during an exhibition, we literally had a whole squadron of pigeons descend on us\u2014we startled an entire flock, and apparently there was something left over for everyone else too\u2026 (laughs)<\/em> But seriously, I couldn\u2019t choose just one exhibition. What matters most to me are the long-term relationships with artists and the opportunity to watch their work evolve. Tom\u00e1\u0161 Jetela, for example, is one of the younger artists whose painting I\u2019ve been following for some time, and I really enjoy seeing where his work gradually takes him. We also currently have an exhibition of sculptures by prominent Czech artists, including Jaroslav R\u00f3na, Michal Gabriel and Tom\u00e1\u0161 Pavlack\u00fd, and I\u2019m very happy about that one. Perhaps that\u2019s also why I don\u2019t particularly like the label gallerist<\/em>. I feel that it can sometimes unnecessarily create a certain role or distance.
