Painting Studio I at the Academy of Fine Arts in Prague, led by Ji\u0159\u00ed Sopko, focused on the study of the figure and the chromatic construction of the image. For the students, it was always essential to search for an original expression that revitalized figuration while also discovering new ways to reconsider pictorial composition. The studio\u2019s teaching evaluated the foundations of the modern avant-gardes and their pluralistic-postmodern transformations and reinterpretations in modes of presentation, both within the medium of painting and beyond (for example, the phenomenon of painting-specific installations developed by the studio assistant Igor Korpaczewski and its influence). Color and intuition played a significant role. The studio maintained the developmental continuity of painting and the \u201ccontemporary image\u201d even during a period unfavorable to painting (the 1990s).
