The exhibition ZENGA – Japanese Zen paintings from the Kaeru-an collection – will, for the first time ever, include another part of the exceptional collection of Zen paintings and calligraphy, which was donated to the gallery in 2019 by the Dutch collector Felix Hess. Such a comprehensive example of the Zen Buddhist approach to ink painting and calligraphy is quite unique in a non-Japanese (or at least European) context. Zenga – literally Zen paintings – which encompasses both painting and calligraphy – undoubtedly has a very special appeal, thanks to the remarkable work with brush and ink.
