AVU Gallery

AVU Gallery is the exhibition space of the Academy of Fine Arts in Prague, with a history spanning more than thirty years. It presents the work of students and graduates and runs its own film programme, Kino GAVU.

What is the most bizarre thing you’ve ever had to deal with as part of installing an exhibition?

GAVU TEAM (GAVU): Getting a hot tub into the gallery.

What does it usually look like 20 minutes before an opening?

GAVU: Sometimes exactly the same as three days before the opening.

How do you know when an exhibition has really been a success?

GAVU: When it’s installed in time for the opening.

Which exhibition will you never forget, and why?

GAVU: In 2022, when the gallery was still located in Žižkov, Nela Britaňáková gave up her exhibition slot at the gallery, and the space was transformed into a community studio and a base for people fleeing the war in Ukraine. Instead of a conventional solo exhibition, the space thus became a place of solidarity.
