In just two years of its existence, the Young Selection project has established itself as one of the most important platforms for discovering a new generation of Czech artists. Its main goal is to support creators at the beginning of their careers – artists who do not yet have gallery representation, as well as those returning with new work after a brief hiatus (for example, due to parental leave). A number of artists from previous editions are now successfully exhibiting in established galleries, or their works have become part of significant collections.
“Young Selection brought me primarily the opportunity to establish personal relationships with collectors and art professionals. The interest generated by the exhibition and the Prague Art Week presentation was an important confirmation for me that my current work is finding its audience,” confirms Marianna Stránská, a participant in last year’s edition and a current resident at The House.
From Painting to Intermedia: The Diversity of Contemporary Art Thinking
This year’s third edition presents a wide spectrum of approaches, including painting, drawing, sculpture, installations, and intermedia. The expert jury, consisting of Natálie Kubíková (KodlContemporary), Adam Hnojil (Pro Arte), Tomáš Klička (Art Antiques), Kristýna Špringlová (The House), and Lenka Bakešová (Prague Art Week), selected the final eleven based not only on high artistic quality but also on their ability to reflect contemporary trends and develop a clearly formulated signature style.
“We wanted to present artists who are completely different from each other, yet together they demonstrate the breadth of contemporary artistic thinking. The selection brings together works building on the surrealist tradition, posthumanist thought, and classical sculptural disciplines,” summarizes jury member Tomáš Klička.
An Exhibition in a Vibrant Art Ecosystem
This year, the exhibition is once again held in the inspiring premises of The House, a modernist villa in Prague 6, which functions as a unique art hub and residential center. Festival visitors will thus be able not only to view the exhibition itself but also to peek into the studios of local residents and experience the environment where contemporary art is being created.
“While Prague Art Week maps the most interesting aspects of the art scene across the whole of Prague, Young Selection acts as a compass pointing to the newest talents. This is the best confirmation for us that the project truly helps the emerging generation,” concludes festival director Lenka Bakešová.
