Prague City University: Redefining Art Education

In its brief history, Prague City University, previously known as Prague College, has built a strong reputation particularly in the field of Art & Design.

Founded in 2004, Prague City University (PCU) has two campuses in the city centre and a third campus in the creative district of Pragovka. The university encompasses four schools; the School of Art & Design, School of Business, School of Media & IT and the School of Education. Programmes are taught in English to students from over 70+ nationalities, including Czech & Slovak students. Graduates are awarded a British or Czech accredited degree, depending on the programme.

The School of Art & Design

From its early beginnings, PCU has had a reputation for offering the most renowned Art & Design programmes taught in English, and as such the School of Art & Design has continued to expand.

Currently, students have the option to select Bachelor’s and Master’s degree programmes in various fields of study including Graphic Design, Fine Art, Experimental Media and Future Design. The school also offers a one-year Foundation programme that introduces students to essential manual and digital artistic skills. In addition, PCU has a Creative Media Production degree. This programme covers essential content creation skills such as film making, editing, writing, podcasting, and storytelling.

Across all programmes students learn by undertaking real-world projects briefed by external partners; they organise their own exhibitions, and participate in workshops, field trips, festivals, and lectures outside of the traditional classroom setting. This also includes attending the School’s Visiting Artists Lecture series, a public event featuring distinguished artists and designers from both local and international creative fields who come to the university campus to share their insights. Students also benefit from one-to-one learning from an experienced international faculty with academic credentials and professional experience as working creatives.

A New Campus to Build Connections

In 2024, as PCU celebrates its 20th anniversary, it will enter an exciting new phase with the launch of a specially designed main campus in the vibrant Pragovka creative district. PCU’s move to the E Factory building will bring together all students under the one roof. This historically significant building will feature energy efficient studios, classroom spaces and public areas specifically designed to accommodate the needs of the university and its students.

School of Art & Design students will also have the unique opportunity of being immersed in a vibrant community of artists, start-ups and incubators. Being the only educational institution in such an environment will give them a clear advantage to connect with working artists and business professionals who are eager to tap into new talent and creativity. This collaboration will give students the chance to establish professional connections and to develop their own portfolio and career further.
